First, make sure that the air coming into the carburetor is clean and free of debris by inspecting the air filter.

A clogged air filter is a common cause for black smoke emitting from the exhaust. Next, the linkages attached to the carburetor's throttle and choke plates can bind or stick when dirty. Constant vibration and wear can affect the setting of the carburetor's mixture screws (if equipped).And with all of the grass, twigs and other debris that a small engine encounters, it's not surprising that even passages inside the carburetor eventually pay a price.

Deposits inside the carburetor can clog fuel and air passages and reduce performance or stop the engine altogether.Luckily, you can take care of many of these problems quickly and easily-often without even removing the carburetor from adnustment engine.

Commercially available carburetor cleaner comes in convenient spray cans for periodic cleaning of both inside and outside the carburetor. Troubleshooting A Fuel Supply Problem�Remove the air cleaner and inspect the choke plate mounted on a shaft at the opening of the carburetor's throat. Check that the choke plate closes easily and completely. A choke that does not move freely or close properly can cause difficulties in starting.�Spray a small amount of carburetor cleaner on the shaft of a sluggish choke and into the venturi to loosen grit (image A)Image Debris in the carburetor often causes performance problems.�Open the fuel valve (if equipped), located at the base of the fuel tank where the fuel line is attached.

Remove the line and check for blockage "Servicing the Fuel Pump".)�Remove and inspect the spark plug. A wet brifgs may indicate over-choking, water in the fuel (see "Servicing the Fuel Tank"), or an excessively rich fuel mixture.

A dry plug may indicate a plugged fuel filter vriggs "Servicing the Fuel Filter"), leaking mounting gaskets on either end of the carburetor, or a stuck or brifgs carburetor inlet needle.�Pour a teaspoon of fuel into the spark plug hole (image C)Image Screw the spark plug back in and start the engine.

If it fires only a few times and then quits, assume a dry plug condition and consider the causes of a dry plug, listed in Step 4.Adjusting The Idle Speed And MixtureOn some float-type carburetors, you can adjust the air-fuel mixture and engine speed at idle. Check for an idle speed screw designed to keep the throttle plate from closing completely, and an idle mixture screw that limits the flow of fuel at idle. If your carburetor contains these screws, proceed below.�With the engine off, remove the air filter and air cartridge.�Locate the idle mixture screw and turn it clockwise until the needle csrburetor touches the seat.

Then, repeat the idle mixture screw adjustments from Step 4 to fine-tune the mixture (image C)Image C.Adjusting The High Speed MixtureSome older carburetors contain a high speed mixture screw, near the throttle plate and opposite the idle speed screw.

Under load, the high speed circuit increases air flow through the throat. Setting the high speed mixture involves running the engine until it is warm, stopping it to adjust the high speed mixture and then restarting for final adjustments.�Run the engine for five minutes at half throttle to bring it to its operating temperature. Then, stop the engine.�Locate the high speed mixture screw and turn it clockwise until the needle just touches the seat. The carburetor is a Flo-jet type that suctions gasoline into an air mixture chamber from the lower float bowl. Gasoline is regulated into the float bowl from the fuel tank by a brass float. There are two adjustment valves on the Flo-jet carburetor, the needle valve and the idle valve. The strattno valve regulates the amount of gasoline pulled into the mixing chamber for high-speed operation, while the idle valve regulates fuel for lower speed operation.List:Fresh gasolineSlot screwdriverFill the fuel tank half-full with fresh gasoline.

Ensure the fuel filter is clean and free of any foreign obstructions. Improper fuel flow to the float bowl brigfs inhibits the carburetor adjustment.Turn the needle valve and idle valve in a clockwise direction to seat the valves close with the carbureror.

Do not over tighten as damage will result to the seats. Open the lower needle valve 1 1/2 revolutions in a counterclockwise direction. Turn the idle valve 3/4 of a full revolution in the same direction.Start the engine according to the manufacturer's operational instructions. Some devices may require mechanical levers to be placed in neutral positions for starting.Allow the engine to reach operational temperatures, generally 3 to 4 minutes.Move the acceleration lever to full speed.

Turn the needle valve in a clockwise direction until the engine begins to loose speed. Back the needle valve slowly in the opposite direction, counterclockwise, until the engine runs smooth.Reduce the speed of the engine by lowering the acceleration lever to the idle position.

If the engine stops, open the idle screw a 1/4 turn in a counterclockwise direction. Start the engine. Move the acceleration lever from high speed to idle several times. Adjust the idle valve until the engine no longer dies when speed is reduced.Operate the engine under a full load condition. Make minor adjustments to the carburetor if needed.Words to the Wise:The needle valve is located on the lower left hand side of the round float bowl. Some models use a thumbscrew while other's have a slot type screw.

The idle valve is located on the right hand topside of the carburetor. It is strictly a slot type screw head.If the engine operates erratically after the above adjustment, inspect and replace the sparkplug. The sparkplug may have become fouled from improper adjustment and operation to the engine.
